Spring has sprung! With the winter sports season at an end, the Downingtown West boys’ lacrosse team began their season. Tryouts were held for both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams the week of March 6th, where the coaches finalized the teams for the 2022 season. The Whippets had their first regular season home game on March 26th, where they took a tough loss against Strath Haven High School.
The boys practice six times a week for two hours each day, with Sunday as their day off. During the rest of the season, the boys will face a total of 14 schools with 7 home games and 9 away games. This year, the boys will face the Cougars in the East vs. West game on Tuesday, May 3rd. JV will begin at 3:30 and Varsity will start at 5:30, so make sure to show out for the D-West laxers!
This year’s varsity captains include Jackson Chiappa (’22), Zach Rossman (’22), Michael Straub (’22), Jakob Toth (’22), and Thomas Venzie (’23). These boys set a great example to the underclass lacrosse players. For junior varsity, Ryan Merrick (’24), Jimmy Bossong (’24), Steven Wogram (’24), and Ayden Smith (’24) take the role as team captains. When asked about the upcoming season, JV Captain Steven Wogram (’24) shared, “Thinking about this season excites me. We have a lot of potential in our players, and an opportunity to have a great season. There is a lot of skill, drive, and power within each individual which gives me confidence we are going to build a strong team.”
Steven hosted a team dinner for the boys at the beginning of the season, and they had a blast. He says, “Our team has definitely gotten closer over the past few weeks, I feel like we have potential to be lifelong brothers.” Overall, between the talent and passion among the young lacrosse players, the Downingtown West 2022 lacrosse team has a promising season ahead of them.
