Students of Downingtown Area School District’s Youth Prevention Council came together on Monday, October 29th to plant tulips in celebration of Red Ribbon Week.  The Youth Prevention Council, founded in cooperation with Downingtown’s chapter of Communities That Care, took on this project in an effort to raise visibility of an important social issue and also beautify the Downingtown West campus.

Plant the Promise is a drug and alcohol awareness campaign that people across the country participate in each year. Downingtown West students joined forces to plant red tulip bulbs, which will bloom in the spring as a reminder of the beauty that comes with a substance-free lifestyle. Similar plantings occurred at other schools and institutions in the Downingtown area, including East, STEM, and various churches.  “We had a lot of help from staff members and students,” Downingtown West’s YPC adviser, Ms. Denise Shovlin, recounted. “They all did a wonderful job in coming together to help make a simple gesture into a more significant event in our community.”

The tulips, expected to bloom in April, will be both a beautiful and important reminder to students at West that a drug-free life can be special.  Look for them as we get closer to springtime here in Downingtown!
