Every year, Downingtown West participates in a Danish exchange student program. Juniors and seniors have the opportunity to apply to be chosen for the amazing opportunity. Through the exchange, Danish students come to America for 10 days in the fall to stay with a student from West. When Spring arrives, West students will travel to Denmark to be reunited with their new friends and experience a different culture.

Downingtown West showed the Danes around Washington D.C., Philadelphia, West Chester, and Downingtown to show them American culture. West students involved in the exchange also hung out with each other and fellow Whippets so the Danes could enjoy the social aspect of American life. During one of Downingtown West’s football games, several Danish students said it felt like the movies because many of them have not experienced a football game in a stadium with a marching band.

This year, according to senior Sam Haltom, there were about 30 students taking part in the exchange. Her favorite memory from the first part of the exchange was taking the Danes to Washington D.C. She said the Danish exchange program “changed [her] for the better. [She has] such a better understanding of different cultures.”

Lexi Locascio (’19) mentioned that the exchange “opened [her] up to more people and new culture. [She] got to make more friends from West and another country.” Lexi is looking forward to further experiencing culture differences and new food when she heads over to Denmark in the Spring.
