The Downingtown West Cross country team has worked very hard over the summer and throughout the beginning of the school year, preparing to become state qualifiers.

Last weekend, Saturday October 13th, Downingtown West showed how much work they have been putting in when the boys and girls of the Whippet XC crew took home home some impressive times.

Boys Varsity, Boys JV, and the Varsity Girls had a long day in NYC, competing against top level schools on the Eastern Coast. In the Boys’ Varsity Eastern Race, Aidan Barnhill (‘21), Issac Valderrabano (‘19), Kevin Wagner (‘19), Ben Datte (‘20), and Jack Cappello (‘20) put up a great fight against strong opponents. In the Girls’ Varsity D Race, Aliza Thir (‘21), Reagan Flannery (‘20), Ashley Cichon (‘20), and Lauren Perlish (‘19) crossed the line, medaling within the top seventy-five, giving the girls’ team 5th place in their race section. Following the race, senior and veteran XC runner Lauren Perlish stated that “the girls all put in teamwork to get the job done!”

Boys JV came to the race with a goal and, boy, did they run for it! Holden Betz (‘21), Declan Rymer (‘21), Matthew Chylack (‘20), and Calean Sims (‘20) came across the line in staggering times, helping the JV boys to place 2nd in their race.

Overall, the athletes that had the opportunity to run last weekend put in amazing times. Although this Invitational was a success, major work still needs to be put in to provide stellar placements at Districts and States, both of which are only weeks away.

West Side Beat, along with the Downingtown West community, cannot wait to see how the team will finish up this season, Best of luck to the Downingtown Cross Country Team in the home stretch!
