Powderpuff 2017: Juniors Win!

Jaiven McIntosh, Staff Reporter

Every year at West the young women in the junior and senior classes compete against each other in the annual Powderpuff Flag Football game. This year the game was held at Kottmeyer Stadium on November 21st, and the proceeds went to a charity of the junior class’s choosing. The girls put in weeks of training for the game and were coached by the Downingtown West Football players. The senior coaches were Josh Bigelow, Nick Varano, Andrew Hibbs, and Mitchel Michale. The junior coaches included Evan Richard, Ryan Wetzel, Danny Burns, Jaiven McIntosh, Owen Landis, Chrish Yaksich, and Ryan Hammond. In practices, the girls learned the fundamentals of throwing, catching, route running and blocking techniques to prepare for the game.

The game was a heated one but in the end the junior girls won the game with a final score of 17-7. This was also a historical game as well because the 2017 juniors snapped the senior winning streak that has been in place since 2010. After the game I interviewed Alanna Braxton, a wide receiver and linebacker for the junior class. When asked about her experience and if she would come and play again as a senior, she said, “It was amazing to be a part of something so fun! I can’t wait for next year!”

Thank you to all of the organizers, coaches, referees, and players who helped make the game a success! Go Whippets!
